Germany Student Visa: Requirements, Process, Cost
A Germany student visa is applicable for those who want to pursue a course of study at one of the many higher education institutions the country has to offer, such as universities, universities of applied science and academies of arts, music and film. To be eligible for a student visa, you must have secured a letter of admission or acceptance from the particular program you have applied for. You are given a study visa for Germany typically for 3 months (or, in some cases, for 6 months), during which time you must go to Germany and finish the needed bureaucratical actions, like getting a residence permit. This 3-month visa can be changed into a residence permit that is valid for the length of your studies (usually lasting one to three years). Furthermore, if you’re not able to complete your studies in the scheduled time, you can prolong your residence permit
Process
To apply for a German study visa, familiarize yourself with the seven steps required for the process:
- Begin by locating the embassy/consulate responsible for student visa applications
- Visit their website for more information and to book an appointment
- Gather the documents needed for the application
- Submit them at the consulate
- Pay the visa fee
- prepare for the interview
Once you have followed all the steps, you just need to await the decision.
Requirements
When applying for a German study visa, it is necessary to provide certain documents. Generally, you will need:
- APS certificate
- TestAs (for undergraduate admissions)
- an application form
- a photocopy of your current passport
- two biometric photos
- an acceptance letter from a German university
- proof of financial resources (e.g. blocked account)
- a letter of motivation/statement of purpose, resume
- proof of health insurance for the first three months in Germany (travel insurance usually works)

Cost
A German student visa has a fee of 75€, however for those under 18 it is reduced to 37.5€. These fees must be paid in the local currency. The accepted payment methods to pay for this visa differ from nation to nation, ranging from cash only, credit card, and demand draft. An important thing to remember is that if the visa is denied, the fee is not refundable and is thus gone.
Please note:
It can take up to three months for a student visa application from Germany to be processed. However, if the student has a scholarship offered from a public German institution such as the DAAD, then it could be processed much quicker. There is no exact timeline for the visa process since it can vary by country. In some places, it can take as little as four weeks, while it may take up to twelve weeks in others. Going early in the application process is strongly advised in order to be able to be in Germany on time.
